WASH Mela 2017: “Wastewater”
On the Occasion of World Water Day
2017

in collaboration with Environment and Public Health Organization (ENPHO) organized
WASH Mela on 22nd March, 2017 at Patan Durbar Square, Mangal Bazaar,
Patan to celebrate World Water Day 2017. The main objective of WASH Mela was to aware people about
waste water management, educate people about dealing water scarcity and
demonstrate idea on urban and rural waste water management techniques. Also,
the program held to sensitize general public on Water, Sanitation and
Hygiene (WASH) and aware general public on World Water Day and share knowledge
on slogan of World Water Day 2017, “wastewater”.
WASH Mela, the
semi-formal program, started with welcoming of Chief Guest, Mr. Bhusan
Tuladhar, Regional Technical Advisor South Asia at UN-Habitat and Guests, Mr.
Bipin Dangol, Executive Director at ENPHO and Mr. Ekaram Maharjan, Senior
Artist. Chief Guest and Guest inaugurated program formally by washing hands and
pouring it into flower pot as symbolization of reuse of wastewater. Winner of
Drawing Competition, held on 16th of March, 2017 on theme
wastewater, was announced during formal program and prizes were distributed.
Kushal Dhakal and Roshani Matang were first and third position holder
respectively, from Everest English School. David Prajapati from Vidhya Bikash
Secondary Boarding School held second postion from drawing competition. Prize
was handed over to David Prajapati’s mother on behalf of him and prize of
Kushal Dhakal and Roshani Matang was handed to representative since students
were unable to be present at program due to their final examination.
More than five
hundred people visited WASH Mela. Visitors were sensitized through drama show that spread information on rainwater harvesting,
reuse of wastewater and status and reason of pollution in Bagmati River. Flash
Mob, drama and games worked as mass attracting tool. Informative games provided
information as well as fun to public. Face painting at WASH Mela also helped
share information about WASH through paints in face and hands. Apart from
stalls of organizer, SmartPaani also had its stall which shared knowledge on
rainwater harvesting and filters produced by them.
People were sensitized exhibition of drawings and photo exhibition. Visitor groups included from young to old people, general public, school
and college students and professional. WASH Mela was successfully conducted
from 9:30 am to 4:30 pm that marked World Water Day 2017.
